Batavians may notice some smoke from controlled burns being conducted throughout the community. The objective of these prescribed burns is to improve native plant communities by reducing invasive plant species.
Residents in the areas around the planned burn areas were notified by letter by V3, the contractor hired by the City to conduct the prescribed burns. The following stormwater basin areas are on the list for controlled burns before Dec. 31, weather permitting:
- Deerpath Road Bridge basin
- Windmill Lakes basin
- Normandy basin
- Braeburn Marsh (west of Randall Rd)
- Mahoney Creek at Raddant/Cleveland
Additionally, the Batavia Park District has contracted another vendor, Bluestem Ecological, to conduct prescribed burns at Payne Woods Park, Prairie Lathem Park, Prairie Path Park, and Laurelwood Park between Nov. 15 and Dec. 15.
Both prescribed burn contractors have received permits for all locations from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, and have notified the City of Batavia Police and Fire Departments, the Kane County Department of Health, and Tri-Com Central Dispatch.
For questions regarding these burn projects, please contact Batavia Public Works, 630-454-2300.
