Memorial Day Service at VFW Post 1197The Batavia Overseas VFW post 1197 and Auxiliary invite everyone to attend a short Memorial Day service to honor our fallen comrades, 10:50 a.m., May 30, at the Post, 645 S. Deadline is May 31 to apply for $200 in energy cost assistanceMore than 250,000 Illinois families are set to receive additional payments of $200 this summer to help cover energy costs, Gov. JB Pritzker announced Thursday. All recipients of the energy assistance program for low-income homes, as well as families who apply, should receive the payments for the increased costs, according to Pritzker and the Commerce and Opportunity Department. The deadline for families to apply for utility assistance is May 31, 2022. Applications must be completed in person at local administering agencies, which can be located on DCEO's community services website. Families can also contact 833-711-0374 for support.
Treasure Your Health – Super Savvy Senior ExpoThemed Treasure Your Health, the Senior Expo is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, June 1 in the J. Murphy Gym at the Eastside Community Center, 14 N. Van Buren St. This free event is for individuals ages 50 and older and their caregivers. Registration is not required. A variety of businesses and services will be showcased, and you can browse booths devoted to healthcare, entertainment, and travel, among others. Free refreshments will be served, and visitors will be able to enter for a chance to win great prizes. The first 100 attendees will receive a bag they can fill with all their goodies and information. Is your child prepared for an emergency? The Kane County Office of Emergency Management is offering Youth Emergency and Disaster Preparedness classes this summer for children in 1st-3rd grades. In this class, students will learn about the difference between an emergency, a disaster, and a hazard as well as what types of emergencies to be prepared for, protective actions to take, family emergency communications plans, disaster supply kits, Go Bags, gun safety and what to do during severe weather. A First Aid/CPR instructor will teach age-appropriate basic first aid, including responsive vs. unresponsive, phoning for help, when to call 911, personal protective equipment, the importance of handwashing, finding the problem, stopping bleeding and choking. The class will end with the kids receiving a Go Bag and a tour of the building. The classes are not intended to scare kids, but rather age-appropriate, fun, and educational to build confidence and empower them to be prepared. Classes will be held June 4 at the City of Batavia Municipal Center, 100 N. Island Ave. Registration is required as space is limited. Reminder to have your underground lawn sprinkler systems testedDo you have an underground lawn sprinkling system? If so, be sure you’ve scheduled your required annual testing for the cross connection control, or backflow preventer, devices. Whether you use your system or not, annual testing is required by state law to help protect the public water supply. Sewer backup? What to doIf your residence experiences a sewer backup call the City of Batavia at 630-454-2000. The city has emergency response personnel 24 hours a day. The problem you are experiencing could be with the city’s main line. If it’s not an issue with the city’s line, then the city can provide you guidance in hiring a plumber.
Check your insurance policy to determine if you are covered for sanitary sewer back-up and/or sump pump failure. Many homeowners’ policies do not cover sewer back-ups or water damage unless you have purchased a special provision for this purpose.
If you experience a sewer backup, call your insurance company first to report any damage to your property or possessions. The City of Batavia’s insurance company will determine if the city is responsible for damages caused by a sewer backup.
The Illinois Association for Floodplain and Stormwater Management has a guide that includes tips for cleaning up after a flood or sewer overflow.

City program makes it easier to plant a treeThis program offers a parkway tree on a cost-sharing basis with the resident paying half. This program is a great deal that includes the tree, planting, and mulch. There are ¾”-1-1/4” diameter Chinquapin Oak, Black Oak, and Ironwood trees that city crews can plant within a few weeks after receiving your request, weather permitting. A limited number of trees are available for spring and fall planting. Please visit the 50/50 Parkway Tree Program website for availability and details.
Brush collection scheduleThe next east side brush collection begins the week of Monday, June 20; west side collection begins on Monday, June 27. Please have brush/limbs at the curb for collection no later than 7 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled week, but no sooner than the weekend before that. The Batavia Fireworks Committee is selling yard signs which show your support for the 2022 Batavia Fireworks Show and Sky Concert. Signs are $25 and all proceeds go to support the fireworks show. Each year the committee has to raise $40,000 each year to put on the 4th of July fireworks show. Taxpayer dollars have never been used to pay for these fireworks, so volunteers run several fundraisers for the cause. To order your sign, complete your order at bataviafireworks.org and a sign will be delivered to your lawn. Or, visit Batavia's Utility Billing office at City Hall. 100 N. Island Ave., between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday-Friday, where you can pay for a sign and take one home.
Leaf burning reminderThe City of Batavia does not allow burning leaves or anything else other than seasoned firewood and charcoal. Fires need to be less than 3-feet in diameter by 2-feet high except with a permit.
