At Batavia’s wastewater treatment plant, the water portion takes approximately 12 to 24 hours to treat, while the solids treatment process takes about 28 days. On average, the plant cleans 3.2 million gallons of water each day before it is safely returned to the environment.
National Public Works Week is a chance to recognize the essential work happening behind the scenes every day to protect public health and the Fox River.

The Batavia Police Department will be out at the Batavia Farmers' Market this Saturday, May 23rd! Swing by our booth to say hello, chat with officers, and learn more about important resources like 9‑8‑8, and the new City of Batavia E‑Mobility Ordinance.
We love connecting with our community, and we hope to see you there!

Batavia’s Engineering & Streets Division helps oversee these basins, which are designed to collect and slowly release rainwater to reduce flooding and help protect local waterways.
Public Works professionals play an important role in keeping Batavia safe, sustainable, and prepared for changing weather conditions.
#NationalPublicWorksWeek #BataviaIL

In addition to keeping streets safely illuminated year-round, the division also helps spread holiday cheer by installing downtown holiday decorations each season.
Thank you to Batavia’s Electric Division for helping keep our community bright during National Public Works Week and beyond.

The outage was caused by a lightning strike to a utility pole across from the main entrance to Alice Gustafson School. Crews inspected the pole, reinforced it with through bolts to prevent further splitting, and safely restored service to affected customers. The damaged pole is scheduled to be replaced later this week.
We appreciate the dedication of our electric crews, who work around the clock to keep power reliable and our community safe, especially during severe weather events.

Every day, Public Works professionals work behind the scenes to ensure residents and businesses have access to safe, reliable drinking water.
During National Public Works Week, we thank the dedicated employees who help keep Batavia flowing.

Contract crews from Townsend will be working in the area for approximately one month to trim trees around power lines. Crews typically use orange-and-white bucket trucks and wood chippers.
Some work will require access to rear utility easements located in backyards. Crews will make every effort to contact residents before entering private property.
Thank you for your cooperation as this important maintenance work helps improve electric system reliability and safety.

Staff lead nine tours for nine schools, giving students a behind-the-scenes look at how the City’s streets, electric, water, sewer, and engineering systems work.
From turning on the tap to maintaining roads and utilities, Public Works helps keep Batavia running every day. Thank you to our Public Works team for inspiring the next generation during National Public Works Week.

Known for taking initiative on every call, mentoring fellow firefighters, and continually working to improve his skills, Jacob exemplifies what it means to serve. His leadership and selfless service have earned him the prestigious Battalion Chief Randy Zies Firefighter of the Year Award.
Daniel Johnston’s journey with the department reflects deep dedication from paid-on-call firefighter to paramedic to full-time firefighter/paramedic. The City is using IrisPRO Pave, a specialized road assessment tool, to evaluate the condition of local streets. Equipped with cameras and sensors, the vehicle collects data on pavement conditions such as cracks, wear, and surface quality. This helps us identify areas that may need maintenance or repair.
Why it matters:
Regular pavement assessments help keep roads safe, smooth, and reliable. By identifying issues early, we can make smarter, more cost-effective repairs and avoid larger, more expensive problems down the road.
What to expect:
The IrisPRO Pave operates like a normal vehicle and will not disrupt traffic or your daily routine.
What happens next:
The data collected will guide future street maintenance and improvement plans. This helps us prioritize repairs where they’re needed most.
This is part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, high-quality roadways across the community.

Agenda highlights include:
• Tri-City Ambulance
• Batavia Access Toy Drive
• Expansion of a vehicle telematics and operations platform
• Approval of a charter for the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) Task Force
The meeting is open to the public.

🌳 Celebrate Arbor Day in Batavia! 🌳
Join us as Batavia celebrates Arbor Day on Friday, April 24 with a ceremonial tree planting at 12:30 p.m. at 209 S. River Street in the riverside park. Stop by, enjoy the outdoors, and help us recognize the importance of our community’s urban forest.
This year, we’re also excited to share that Batavia was awarded a Chicago Region Trees Initiative Tool Kit Grant, helping strengthen our efforts to care for and grow our tree canopy for generations to come.
As a municipality, we’re committed to enhancing quality of life through responsible urban forest management. That work is supported by our dedicated Environmental Commission and Tree Commission, who partner with City staff and elected officials to promote sustainability and ensure new developments meet tree preservation and planting standards.
Thanks to this grant, our team received a wide range of tools—including shovels, pruners, loppers, soil probes, and more—that will support our annual tree planting efforts and ongoing maintenance programs for seasons to come.
🌱 We hope to see you Friday as we plant another tree and continue building a greener Batavia together!

Hydrant flushing helps maintain water quality and ensures hydrants are operating properly for fire protection. Residents may notice temporary drops in water pressure or discolored water during flushing activities. If discoloration occurs, run cold water for a few minutes until it clears.
Signs will be posted in neighborhoods to notify residents when flushing is occurring in their area.
We appreciate your patience as crews complete this important work. Visit bataviail.gov for updates and additional information.

Congratulations to Batavia Fire Department Lieutenant Greg Stoffel on his retirement after 29 years of dedicated service to the City of Batavia. Thank you for your commitment to keeping our community safe.
Council also honored Batavia High School student Kai Enos for winning the IHSA Boys Class 2A State Wrestling Championship, an incredible achievement.
Thank you both for representing Batavia with excellence.
